Parentcrew has had a great year. Some of the things we accomplished this year: hosting Anthony 101, back to school popsicle parties, golf ball drop fundraiser, multicultural night, volunteers for book fair, teachers' snacks and lunches, Spring fundraiser, teacher appreciation week and a couple of visits from the ice truck. Funds were given for African drums and we had a great end of the year inflatable party. Next year should be just as exciting. See you in August!

Parentcrew needs you! In the Fall, we need volunteers to help with the Scholastic Book Fair and Grandparents Days. If you are able to help, please click on the "comments" link below. When you leave your "comment" please type "BOOKFAIR" and the times/days of the week you prefer. Please also leave your name and contact information within your comment.

Another big volunteer opportunity is helping the Teacher Liaisons. Twice a month, volunteers bring snacks to the teachers’ workroom. Also, they help out with Teacher Appreciation Week. If you are interesting in helping, please click on the "comment" link below and please type "TEACHER" in your comment and specify that you would like to help with snacks and/or teacher appreciation. Please make sure to leave your name and contact information within your comment.

We will have carpool assignments posted in early August on TAS website.

Planning is underway for Friends of The Anthony School Annual Celebration & Fundraiser - Denim & Diamonds 2010.

What's new this year?
There will many new and exciting things this year related to the spring fundraiser. Here is a quick list of some of the highlights:

You will be able to purchase your tickets online! (Tickets go on sale 1/29)

Late January we will launch an event website that will feature an online catalog.

New and unusual auction items.

Student Art from ALL grades.

A professional auctioneer will lead the evening.

No check-out line, really. (More on how this amazing feat works later…)

We've set our highest fundraising goal yet - we need to raise money to purchase 9 (NINE!) SMART Boards and bring our teacher on-site certified training. We want to be able to say "every student is learning with SMART Board technology every day."

We're planning for record attendance and offering attending Grandparents "V.I.G" treatment (look for more about this in the upcoming newsletter, 1/27).

Many ways to win some great prizes!

We will have curbside service provided by Parentcrew members station at both morning carpool lines to accept your items. Remember for every Capri Sun pouch we collect that is $.02 for our school and we also earn cash for your ink cartridges, cell phones, digital cameras, games systems, laptops, iPods, video games and DVD movies just to name a few. Please be sure that the power accessories for all electronic items and included. Ask local business owners if they would like to contribute too!

Every item we collect means for funds for our school. SO BE GREEN WITH PANTHER PRIDE ON OCTOBER 5, 2009 AND BRING YOUR RECYCLABLES! Keep watching the Blog for more information!

Help Anthony Make Money and Do Our Part to Save Reduce Landfill Waste

I am glad to announce that the Anthony School will be part of the TerraCycle Drink Pouch Brigade. As an eco-friendly innovator, TerraCycle converts the used drink pouches into unique fashion bags, tote bags, pencil cases, and other items for kids and adults! TerraCycle has teamed up with the largest producer of drink pouches in the country, Capri Sun, and a young organic entry into the market, Honest Kids, to help address this problem! Every year BILLIONS of drink pouches end up in dumpsters and landfills across America. TerraCycle, Capri Sun and Honest Kids are working together to put an end to this awful loss of resources.

For each Capri Sun and Honest Kids drink pouch we recycle with them we earn $.02. What an easy way to generate revenue for our school and put something we use everyday to good us instead of adding to landfill waste. Start collecting your pouches at home and keep your eye out from when and where the collection boxes will be placed at the school.

Keep your eyes open for more information and tips on how Anthony School and contribute to making your space on Earth a little nicer. Together with your help we CAN make a difference!

What are Robert’s Rules of Order? (Douglas N. Case; San Diego State University)
The first edition of the book was published in February, 1876 by U.S. Army Major Henry Martyn Robert. Its procedures were loosely modeled after those used in the United States House of Representatives. Robert wrote Robert’s Rules of Order after presiding over a church meeting and discovering that delegates from different areas of the country did not agree about proper procedure. The book is now in its 10th edition; Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised (RONR).

General Points on Parliamentary Procedure Applicable to Parentcrew:

All members have equal rights, privileges and obligations.
A quorum must be present for the group to act – if the bylaws of the organization do not establish a quorum, the general rule is that a majority of the entire membership must be present in order to transact business.
Full and free discussion of every motion is a basic right.
Only one question at a time may be considered, and only one person may have the floor at any one time.
Members have a right to know what the immediately pending question is and to have it restated before a vote is taken.
Personal remarks are always out of order.
Silence gives consent. Those who do not vote allow the decision to be made by those who do vote.

General Procedure for Handling a Motion:
1. A member normally must obtain the floor by being recognized by the chair.
2. Member makes a motion (state a motion affirmatively. Say, "I move that we ..." rather than, "I move that we do not ...").
3. A motion must be seconded by another member before it can be considered (the Chairman can call for a second); if there is no second to your motion, the motion is lost.
4. Before the motion is restated by the chair, any member can rise, without waiting to be recognized, and suggest a modification of the wording to clarify the motion. The maker of the motion can choose to accept or reject the modified wording (does not require a second).
5. If the motion is in order, the chair will restate the motion and open debate (if the motion is debatable).
6. The maker of a motion has the right to speak first in debate.
7. Debate is closed when:
a. Discussion has ended, or
b. A two-thirds vote closes debate ("Previous Question")
8. The chair restates the motion, and if necessary clarifies the consequences of affirmative and negative votes.
9. The chair calls for a vote.
10. The chair announces the result.
11. Any member may challenge the chair's count by demanding a “Division of the Assembly.”

Each year Parentcrew hosts a fall fundraiser to fund our operating needs. Some of the things accomplished by the proceeds from the 2008 fall fundraiser were:

Annual Multicultural Event (Family Night during TAS Book Fair)

All of these things were only possible because of the hard work done by you, the families within the school.

The fundraiser Parentcrew hosts each spring is held to raise funds for a specific need for the school. All proceeds from spring fundraisers are given to the school (after subtracting the fundraiser's expenses). It is the fall fundraisers that give Parentcrew funds to operate for the entire school year; carrying out the various events and improvements planned.

When faced with the task to choose a fall fundraiser for the 2009-2010 school year; Parentcrew felt it would be important to hear from our families as to the type of fundraiser they preferred to participate in. We are very grateful for the way families have participated in the past; participation is a common thread to success no matter what type of fundraiser is chosen.

Don't Miss TAS Multicultural Event!

The Multicultural Event will be held on Tuesday, Oct 28th, 2008, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM (in conjunction with Family Night at the Book Fair). Please come to the event and celebrate the diversity of our Anthony community! We will showcase over 20 countries that are representative of a portion of our student body, have samplings of food from around the globe, and play games that children from other countries play. There will be a wealth of information to absorb and some of which will be usable to answer questions for extra credit (teachers will determine the extra credit value) - you must attend to participate in the extra credit! Wilkerson Food Services has graciously offered to help set the mood for the event with their “Round the World” menu for the kids each day at lunch next week too.

Don’t forget to shop our "Travel the World with a Book" book fair that evening as well!

The committee which planned this event has done an outstanding job. Special Parentcrew THANKS to Sabine Dufis, Claudine Magda, and Gwen Millen. Great job ladies!

Parentcrew has committed to raising funds for Technology for The Anthony School with our 2009 Annual Spring Fundraiser. We are seeing through a plan that would place SmartBoards (interactive learning boards) in more of our classrooms (visit http://smarttech.com/) and create an ongoing annual fund for technology upgrades and purchases.

Going Green...

Next year Parentcrew will be adding a new committee - a "Green Committee."

Going green means “to pursue knowledge and practices that can lead to more environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible decisions and lifestyles, which can help protect the environment and sustain its natural resources for current and future generations.” (http://www.thrall.org/special/goinggreen.html)

Going green means exercising ingenuity; when we teach our children to be resourceful we are teaching them valuable skills essential to problem solving and self reliance. Going green promotes respect; respect for one’s community spawns respect for one’s self. This type of respect for ourselves and our society is contagious and has been found to help foster and encourage a non-violent setting which is also a focus in schools today.

How will we go green? Here are some initiatives to explore:

Hosting an Eco-Fest or Earth Day with eco-friendly activities such as a sampling of natural and/or organic foods, recycling competitions and collection booths, eco workshops and interactive environmental displays, a reverse dunk tank, outdoor activities, incentives for students through an environmentally inspired point-system that will lead up to prizes given at the event, planting new trees/flowers on the school property, and inviting businesses to exhibit eco-friendly solutions.
Moving to behave in a more paperless fashion through the utilization of information sources such as the Parentcrew blog/knowledge bank and the school website. Promoting the use of projection technology at meetings vs. handouts, etc.
Providing education on animals that are close to extinction because of environmental impact.
Creating a school garden club.
Having a carpool challenge week through planning a week of carpooling with friends to reduce the number of automobiles coming to school each day.
Community clean up once a month - students and staff help clean up the schoolyard and its surrounding community.
Focus on consumption by having a “Litter-less Lunch Day” (packing a lunch that creates zero waste) and having an Energy Conservation Day (reduce lights in use, open windows for ventilation, power down computers for one hour).
Composting Day - implementing a composting program (it’s estimated that 30% of our waste can be composted!).
Installing energy-saving LED lights in classrooms and offices.
Battery Collection Day by saving and bringing in old batteries for proper disposal.

Going green can also help provide another kind of “green” for our school. Some fundraising ideas include hosting a school wide yard/consignment sale, partnering with community businesses (for example, selling reusable Kroger shopping bags and TAS registered Kroger cards together), exploring opportunities through environmentally minded fundraising organizations such as “Greenraising” (www.greenraising.com), hosting an Adopt-a-Tree fundraiser, and/or hosting a Green Motion Marathon where participants can take part in the marathon using any type of transportation they wish, as long as their vehicle of choice is 100% earth-friendly like bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, or their own 2 feet!

These are all just brainstorming ideas at this point. What we do know is “small acts make a difference” – please share your ideas or thoughts on Parentcrew Going Green. Also, if you have an interest in working with this new committee please contact us at president@anthonyschool.org.

Parentcrew Board Meeting - 9/10/08

Parentcrew Board meetings are always held the 2nd Wednesday of each month. These are open meetings and anyone in the Anthony community is invited to attend. We meet in the "Flex House" which is located at 7625 Iowa Street (little brick house with a green porch right behind the school). The meetings begin after morning drop-off, we'll get started no later than 8:15 AM. Parentcrew had 192 Anthony community members sign up to become involved in Parentcrew committees and events! What a show of terrific support and desire on the Anthony community's part to work to make our school the very best it can be.

TAS Newsletter Re-Design!

You spoke and we listened... it seems that the majority of the Anthony community would like to see the newsletter re-designed. Something no more than 4 pages so it's printable for parents and for school marketing.

In order to accomplish this, a lot of detailed newsletter information will now have clickable links to view that information. For example, if there is a form for an event - the newsletter will mention the event and a short one sentence summary and provide a link for the form and more details. This also pertains to repeated information (like carpool rules). If an item interests you or pertains to you - you will be able to click a link to read more.

Another large part of the newsletter's content (and a VERY important part) is photos of the kids. In order to shorten the document that communicates the news we've decided to, once a month, publish a separate document that would highlight and honor our students. This way we do not have to start using thumbnail-sized photos so you can still use the publication as a keepsake for your child. You will still submit your photos and "brag" stories just like you do now (email them to newsletter@anthonyschool.org).

Your photo submissions and student news stories will come out on the 2nd Thursday of each month vs. each week. Please do not hesitate to submit these kudos for our kids! We love publishing them and feel it is important to give the children public accolades.

We hope these changes prove to be good ones, as with any change we plan to be flexible and make sure to tweak things until they feel right. Thank you for the feedback and please continue to give it!
